Our Family

Julie (1943-2026)

Julie, the youngest daughter of Alec and Lilian, was born towards the end of World War II. She cherished her childhood on Dunlop Street, surrounded by family, neighbours, and the vibrant life of her local church.

After marrying, Julie moved to Gunnedah in rural NSW, where she welcomed three sons. She remained deeply involved in church life, volunteering generously and forming lasting friendships. Julie held great appreciation for the care provided by rural GPs in both Gunnedah and later Wellington, particularly during seasons when she faced mental health challenges.

Following a move to Canberra and the breakdown of her marriage, Julie devoted herself to raising her three boys. The family was warmly supported by her parents and by friends within the church community. During these years, she served as Superintendent of a thriving Sunday School and Youth Group, taught religious education in schools and lead a cub scout pack, shaping the lives of many young people with her encouragement and faith.

Julie had a natural empathy and a deep interest in the inner lives of others. When her sons reached adulthood, she relocated to Brisbane to study at Bible College, embracing opportunities to share the good news of Jesus with people from a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds.

In her later years, Julie returned to her childhood home on Dunlop Street to care for her ageing parents. She continued to nurture close relationships with lifelong friends and extended family. Her experiences—rooted in family, faith, and the realities of rural life—helped shape the vision of the Dunlop Street Fund, with its commitment to strengthening families, supporting wellbeing in rural communities, and partnering with organisations grounded in a Christian worldview.
